Speaking to 100% Paillade, Montpellier Chairman Laurent Nicollin cast doubt on the likelihood of French international and AC Milan attacker Olivier Giroud making a return to the Ligue 1 club where he won the French 1st division title.
The 36-year-old centre-forward recently signed a new 1-year extension with the Serie A title winners of 2022.
When asked if he had held discussions with Giroud over a return to Montpellier, Nicollin had the following to say:
“No never! I have a very good relationship with his agents and Olivier. We speak and we exchange messages quite regularly, notably when he is playing in the French national team. He has always been attached to the club even though he has experienced extraordinary things elsewhere. We keep this affectionate connect with Olivier, but listen in life you cannot always come back to Montpellier.”
The Montpellier president believes that Giroud – who won the 2018 World Cup – will finish his playing career in the United States.
“For me, Olivier has come across the Grail in Italy with Milan. The discussions with his agents have been that he finishes in the United States. It was never anticipated that he would finish with Montpellier. I think that his dream is to finish in the United States.”
That looks to be the end to any romantic’s dreams of Giroud concluding his professional career in Ligue 1.
