Metz vs En Avant Guingamp on Monday was absolute carnage. Like, seriously, we mean it: absolute carnage.
Let’s set the scene: it’s a September night at the Stade Saint-Symphorien and we’ve got some Ligue 2 action on the cards that, with all due respect, seemed unlikely to make international headlines.
However, the match certainly got off to a quick start because Metz found themselves 3-1 within the first 16 minutes courtesy of Vincent Manceau’s own goal and a brace from Ablie Jallow.
Chaos in Metz vs Guingamp
Now, bearing in mind that Metz’s results this season had been pretty solid up until this point with three wins, two draws and two defeats, László Bölöni’s men must have been licking their lips as they boasted such a strong advantage early doors.
Sure, Guingamp had made a sound start to the season themselves, but any fan watching their side smash three goals home in less than 20 minutes is expecting a rout on their hands.
Yeah, well, that’s not how this particular bout of chaos was set to play out as the pendulum started to swing in Guingamp’s favour when Metz were reduced to 10 men on the half-hour mark.
A really nasty slide-tackle from Boubakar Kouyaté was enough for him to be sent for an early bath, which opened the door for Stephen Quemper to pull one back for the visitors in first-half stoppage time.
Then, remarkably, in the very same period of time added on, Metz were reduced to nine men when goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja was sent off and conceded a penalty – which Gaëtan Courtet duly converted – for a high foot.
So, to recap, Metz have bottled their 3-1 lead and had two players sent off and it’s only just half-time, but the crazy thing is that the wildest moment of the game is still to come.

Horrendous red card for Danley Jean-Jacques
That’s because Danley Jean-Jacques became the third – yes, the third – Metz player to be given their marching orders for what must frankly go down as one of the worst challenges of 2022.
The Haitian midfielder could have no complaints for being flashed a red card for sending Tristan Muyumba into the stratosphere with a high challenge of the likes that, let’s face it, has led to leg breaks in the past.
Not only did Jean-Jacques land his foot perilously high up his opponent’s leg, but he also went barreling into the challenge with such speed that the referee was left with absolutely no choice.

Things even got so out of hand that the referee suspended the game for 30 minutes due ‘to the behavior of the fans and for lack of safety.’
Guingamp complete the comeback
From there on out, it will come as no surprise to learn that Guingamp were able to take advantage of their three-man superiority as they proceeded to smash home three more goals on the night.
Strikes by Jérémy Livolant, Dylan Louiserre and Warren Tchimbembé ensured that the staggering turnaround from 3-1 down to 6-3 up was complete as Guingamp took the three points back home with them.

It’s fair to say that the Metz dressing room must have been an awkward place to be at full-time, too; no doubt wondering whether they maybe should have kept their heads a bit better while leading by two goals.
However, for better or for worse, it does mean that the game has gone done in internet infamy as one of the most bonkers that anyone has seen in a long, long time.
