Once upon a time, Bayern Munich had a deadly duo who scored and assisted in equal measure. Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski were a head coach’s dream partnership. The pair worked in perfect harmony and beautifully complimented each other’s game effortlessly. Just 12 months on and that seems like a distant memory. However, with the possibility of Harry Kane joining Bayern this summer, will Thomas and Harry become the club’s new dream team?
Alongside Lewandowski, Müller would rack up a good number of goals and averaged around 20 assists per season. However, since the Polish striker moved to Barcelona, the goals dried up and Müller’s assists fell to just eight during the 2022/23 campaign.
Like Lewandowski, Kane is a natural-born number nine and finisher. The all-time top goalscorer for England and Tottenham Hotspur, the 29-year-old is capable of scoring a plethora of goals, particularly when receiving high-quality service from the players around him.
Kane could be the type of striker Müller has been asking for since Lewandowski’s departure.
The World Cup winner is clearly a fan of the Spurs forward. During an interview with Bild, Muller was asked if he liked Kane as a player.
Laughing to himself, the 33-year-old said: “I haven’t found anyone who doesn’t like him!”
Bayern had a number of players last season who were out of sorts. Possibly none more so than Müller due to the lack of an out-and-out striker to bounce off. Playing alongside Sadio Mané and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, the attacking midfielder had some success but nothing to the standard he had set beforehand.
Should Kane join Bayern this summer, you can only imagine it will raise Müller’s game back to the numbers we’re used to seeing.
It also helps that the two are avid golfers and would more than likely develop a bond off the pitch.
