Reims head coach Will Still would be very tempted to fill Sunderland’s managerial vacancy, according to a report from L’Equipe. The outlet understands that the Anglo-Belgian coaching sensation has even made contact with the Black Cats’ executives to make his interest in taking over the Championship side known. L’Equipe go as far as saying that Still would be ready to pack up his bags in the coming days to join Tyneside. On Monday, Still even flew to Sunderland to meet the Black Cats’ hierarchy and present his coaching project.
On the back of a remarkable couple of months in charge of the Champagne side, the 31-year-old Still signed a two-year contract extension with the Ligue 1 club, tying him with Reims until 2025. Despite some encouraging performances this season, Still’s Reims have been hampered by inconsistency. They are currently 8th in the Ligue 1 standings and have lost three out of their last four league games.
Will Sunderland cave in to Reims’ demands?
L’Equipe understands that Still told to his close friends how he was worried about how the Reims squad would look like in the coming months with the AFCON and the AFC Asian Cup taking place, presumably involving Yunis Abdelhamid, Amir Richardson, Junya Ito and Keito Nakamura. Still did not feel, moreover, the desire of Reims to compensate for these temporary departures with significant recruitment during the winter’s transfer window.
Still is also wary that, should results were to plummet, his stock and profile would significantly drop. It remains to be seen whether Sunderland would be ready to find a financial package important enough for Reims to let go of their coaching sensation.
