Varane withdraws from France squad

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has withdrawn from the French national team due to an injury.

Varane left the pitch just after the hour mark of Les Blues’ Nations League group-stage match against Denmark on Friday night with muscular pain in his left thigh.

Despite the World Cup champions taking the lead through Karim Benzema’s sublime close-range finish, the Danes got a 2-1 victory thanks to Andreas Cornelius’ double.

Speaking post-match on Friday evening, France’s assistant manager Guy Stephan provided an update on the 29-year-old.

“Raphael has a muscular problem behind the thigh,” he said.

“He felt some pain. He’s going to undergo medical exams.”

Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate has been drafted into the squad in Varane’s place, earning his first senior call-up.

Didier Deschamps’ team will next be in action on Monday night against Croatia, hoping to pick their first win of the tournament qualifiers.
