Thomas Müller on the brink of Champions League milestone

Thomas Müller is aiming to become just the third person in Champions League history to register 100 wins in the competition.

Bayern Munich host Manchester United at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening as Group A kicks off.

Müller will join Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas, who have 115 and 101 wins, respectively. Luckily for the German international, the odds appear to be in his favour.

Bayern Munich have won their last 19 opening games in the Champions League. No other club can match such a stat. In fact, the last time they lost an opening game, the team weren’t even playing at the Allianz Arena.

You’d have to go back to September 2002 to find the last time Bayern lost their opening fixture. That night, Bayern lost 2-3 to Spanish club Deportivo de La Coruña at the Olympic Stadium. That season, Bayern were knocked out at the group stages, the only time in the club’s history.

In reality, Müller should not only become the third person to win over 100 games in the competition, but he should also overtake Casillas in second place. Bayern are unbeaten in their last 34 group-stage matches in the Champions League (31 wins, 3 draws).

Can they continue that record against a historic Champions League rival, Manchester United, on Wednesday night?
