Nice supporters were treated to what Terem Moffi is capable of in the first leg of the quarter-final in the Europa Conference League against Basel on Thursday evening. The Nigerian scored two goals, the first in the 38th minute to bring Nice level with the Swiss side, and the second just before the break with one of the best goals of the tournament. Moffi reacted to his overhead kick in a post-match interview on Canal+:
“It was a special goal, a special moment. I would never have imagined scoring such a goal. Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing. I saw the ball coming and I tried. The goal of the year? Maybe not. But maybe the goal of the competition.”
The Nigerian striker, ostensibly proud of his goal, went on – “To be honest, it’s not something you can prepare for. I saw Haaland do it last weekend (against Southampton) and I was like, ‘Why not?’”
Despite Moffi’s fantastic effort, Didier Digard’s men failed to maintain their lead in the second half, conceding another goal from Amdouni in the 71st minute. However, the Nice goal scorer seemed confident after the win, calling on the team to show more consistency in the return leg. To qualify for the last four, Nice must secure a win in the return match at the Allianz Riviera on next Thursday.
