Atletico Madrid were knocked out of the Super Cup following a 2-1 loss to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night.
Madrid had a better start to the game, as Joao Felix was put through on goal but his attempt towards the goal went above the bar. Bilbao responded well with Inaki Williams unleashing a right-footed shot from the centre of the boss but it was saved for a corner.
In the second half, Madrid finally broke the deadlock and it was Unai Simon who put the ball into his own net to hand the hosts the lead.
Bilbao drew level in the 77th minute through Yeray Alvarez who headed the ball into from a corner to beat Jan Oblak.
Athletic turned the tables as they took the lead for the first time and it was Nico Williams punishing Madrid from a corner, connecting from Dani Garcia delivery.
In the stoppage time José Giménez was shown a red card for a dangerous foul on a Bilbao player. It was initially a yellow card but after a VAR check it was upgraded to a red.
Bilbao will now face Real Madrid in the finals of the Super Cup who beat rivals Barcelona 3-2 in extra time.
