Steven N’zonzi unhopeful of future international selection

Former Rennes, Roma and Sevilla midfielder Steven N’zonzi (33) gave a bleak assessment of his chances of rejoining the French national team ahead of this year’s World Cup during an interview with Foot Mercato.

N’zonzi currently plays for Qatari club, Al-Rayyan, who he joined back in September on a two-year contract. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Foot Mercato, N’zonzi said, “The national side remains in the corner of my mind, but that’s the case with every player who has experienced the national team, especially since this team are the world champions.”

N’zonzi, who has 20 caps for France continued, “Regarding the coach’s criteria for getting picked, by playing in a championship which isn’t one of the five big European leagues, I don’t think it will be possible to get selected. For now, it isn’t really in my head.”

N’zonzi was reflective of his time with Les Bleus. “I will never forget my time with Les Bleus. I experienced some exceptional moments. It has defined my life. For me, my time with the France national team was brief. At 28, I was selected very late. It was a little too late, I think I could have been selected earlier, but it was a fantastic experience.”
