South African Football Association (SAFA) match official attacked by fans after sending of a goal keeper

SAFA match commissioner Jabu Nzima was taken to hospital on Saturday following a deadly attack by supporters at the KwaNyamazane Stadium in Mbombela during a Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League playoff game between Bayern FC and Secunda M Stars.

Fans erupted in anger as Bayern were granted a penalty late in the 70th minute for a foul inside the area on striker Lolo Mbonani by the Stars goalie, who was also shown a straight red card.

This is the latest example of fan unrest following the vandalization of SAFA referee Victor Hlungwane’s and University of Pretoria scout Tebogo Monyai’s car tires during last week’s first leg.

Bevan Mahlangu, provincial secretary of the SAFA in Mpumalanga, stated that Nzima was released from hospital immediately after the event.

Due to a pitch invasion, the match was ordered to be abandoned.

“Yes, it’s true that match commissioner Jabulani Nzima has been discharged from hospital. I would prefer not to comment on the incident until SAFA receives the match report.

“Once the matter has been tabled before the SAFA DC then I can comment,” Mahlangu tells KickOff.

Bayern FC is managed by Lizo Mjemba, a former Orlando Pirates defender, while Secunda M Stars is owned by Fanyana Sibanyoni, a former SAFA NEC member.
