Shane Long has said he always planned on returning to Reading.
The Irish striker is back at Reading after 11 years following his exit from Southampton on a free transfer.
“There has always been rumours linking me back to the club, and with the embargo going on it limits who they (Reading) can buy,” Long told Reading’s website.
“I came onto the market, I wasn’t sure what my situation was going to be at Southampton and as soon as that was settled I got my agent to get in touch with the club.
“I live in the area and would love to play for this club again, I think everyone is happy in the end. My wife is from Reading, I’ve got friends and family in the area that have been keeping me updated of all the gossip and rumours over the last few windows.”
He added: “It has always been an ambition to come back, I suppose. Getting the chance to do so this year at the age I am is a privilege.
“It’s a club I’m fond of and my mum is still a Reading fan, although she has supported me she has never worn the jacket of another club.”
