Salernitana coach Davide Nicola defended his tactics for their 5-0 thrashing by Inter Milan.
Nicola had been unbeaten since taking over the bottom club, while Salernitana managed four consecutive stalemates including a 2-2 draw with AC Milan.
We came here to play our game and we tried to be aggressive, with a high press, accepting individual duels all over the pitch,” Nicola told Sky Italia.
“Up until the opening goal, we had started well and had the chances to go in front. It would be nice occasionally to open the scoring…
“The goals we conceded were all more or less identical and our defending could’ve been better. I am trying to create a mentality that will allow us to win games, so I see no point going to San Siro and just defending.
“The lads gave their all, we weren’t as sharp as usual and read the situations wrong, but our approach will not change and we will continue to try going for it against any opponent.
“We conceded the second goal right before the break and it was very irritating, then at the third goal we lost our nerve.
“Nonetheless, I knew full well what situation I was facing coming here and our good performances have been down to this attitude, so it’s not a total disaster. We must try to do what we’re doing with more determination and more quality.
“It was not a defeat where Salernitana lost dignity, quite the opposite. These games can also help us realise where we are going wrong and what we can do. We can’t go back. We need to play with courage.”
