It appears that Jose Mourinho is not yet over Roma’s loss to Sevilla in last season’s Europa league final, when they lost on penalties.
Mourinho was quoted by TMW as saying that “I will continue to say until the end that we did not lose the final in Budapest. Every time they tell me about it I’ll say we haven’t lost it.”
Roma did in fact lose that final. Sevilla ran out 4-1 winners on penalties, after a tense affair during normal and extra time. Mourinho lambasted the referee Anthony Taylor and his team in the aftermath of the final, and it seems that the result is still fresh in his mind.
Roma start their Europa League campaign against FC Sheriff tomorrow evening, as they aim to right the wrongs of last season’s journey.
Mourinho’s men will be high in confidence after the weekend’s result. They demolished Empoli 7-0, and the game could not have gone more perfectly. New signing Romelu Lukaku hit the back of the net, whilst Renato Sanches and Paulo Dybala returned from injury to hugely bolster the squad.
Roma will be hoping that this result is the turning of a corner after what had been an awful start to the season, where they saw themselves in 18th place going into the international break.
