Referees call for handball rule changes amid La Liga controversy

Referees are said to have asked for changes in the handball rule amid fresh controversy in La Liga.

The handball has long been a bone of contention in football, with lawmakers still trying and failing to agree on a set rule.

The guidelines around the handball rule have changed regularly over time, and more often than not between recent seasons.

And that has led to a number of controversies, including during Barcelona‘s win over Elche over the weekend.

A penalty was given against Antonio Barragan for a controversial handball, while Jordi Alba dodged punishment when the ball hit his arm later in the game.

Many were split on the decisions, and it has once again led to outrage across La Liga.

In the meantime, referees from around Europe are calling upon IFAB, the rulemakers, to change the handball rule.

Referees are said to want clear guidance around the rule and a clear rule rather than asking them to use ‘interpretation’, which often lands them in trouble with fans and clubs alike.

IFAB were due to meet last week to discuss possible changes, according to Sport, but the meeting was delayed due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

IFAB officials will now meet at a later date to see what they can come up with.
