Premier League clubs set to reintroduce five substitutions from next season

Premier League clubs are set to discuss the prospect of reintroducing five substitutions in Thursday’s meeting.

This will take place during a shareholders’ meeting of all the 20 Premier League clubs, with a majority indicating they will support the idea.

Five substitutes were introduced across the game in May 2020 after the shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League however ditched the rule for the 2020-21 season, with many saying it gave undue advantage to the elite clubs with bigger squads.

Speaking earlier this month, Maheta Molango, chair of the PFA, allayed fears of the ‘smaller’ and ‘mid-sized’ clubs that it will give bigger clubs an undue advantage.

“We are absolutely in favour of it,” he said. “We have made this clear to the Premier League. It should never have been a discussion about competitive advantage because it has nothing to do with a competitive advantage – as studies show. This is purely a question of player welfare.

“When so many games need to be played we need to make sure the players get a chance to rest properly,”
