PLAYER RATINGS | Bayern Munich 1-1 Villarreal – Big names anonymous as Bavarians crash out of the Champions League

Bayern Munich are out of the Champions League. Samuel Chukwueze’s 88th minute equaliser to cancel out Robert Lewandowski’s opening goal to give Villarreal an aggregate 2-1 win.

Manuel Neuer, 5 – Very little to do. Played an excellent progressive pass into Leroy Sané and broke up a Villarreal counter-attack. Conceded the only shot on his goal.

Benjamin Pavard, 4 – Looks much more comfortable in a back three. Had very little to do.

Dayot Upamecano, 4 – Had Bayern’s best opportunity within five minutes of the restart. Did well to find space in the penalty area following a set piece but should have done better getting on the end of Leroy Sané’s cutback.

Lucas Hernández, 5 – Largely wasteful in possession in the opening 45 minutes. Lost the ball on two occasions minutes apart but made an excellent recovery run to deny a Villarreal counter-attack.

Leroy Sané, 5 – Tasked with operating on the right-flank and with defensive tasks, Leroy Sané was one of Bayern’s most productive players. Put some excellent crosses into the box towards Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman but at times, too predictable.

Joshua Kimmich, 5 – Much better with Goretzka partnering him in midfield as opposed to Jamal Musiala in central-midfield in the first-leg. Positionally excellent but not good enough on a big night.

Leon Goretzka, 6 – A welcomed return to the Bayern midfield alongside Kimmich after a lengthy period on the sideline due to injury.

Kingsley Coman, 7 – Troubled Juan Foyth all evening. Always looked to beat his man, reach the byline before firing a cross into the six-yard box. His pressing was instrumental in Robert Lewandowski’s opening goal.

Thomas Müller, 4 – A largely anonymous first 45 but much better in the second. Assisted Robert Lewandowski but missed an excellent opportunity himself.

Jamal Musiala, 4 – Could have perhaps had a penalty on another day after reaching the ball before Rulli. Quiet game but worked hard to try and bring the Villarreal defence out of position.

Robert Lewandowski, 5 – Bayern’s No. 9 with his 13th Champions League goal of the season. Frustrating first-half that could have ended with a sending off. Largely ineffective and far from the Lewandowski we know, but an excellent finish to give Bayern the lead.
