Official | Schalke sign Brest’s Jere Uronen

Bundesliga side Schalke 04 have today announced the signing of Jere Uronen from Brest on loan with an option to buy. The 28-year-old joined up with his new teammates at their training camp in Belek on Friday.

“We are very happy that we were able to sign Jere Uronen,” said Sporting Director Peter Knäbel. “Thomas Ouwejan is still in his final phase of rehabilitation and we needed a viable alternative at left-back, that’s why Jere Uronen’s signing was given top priority.”

Uronen (28) is the second Finn to play for the Royal Blues after Teemu Pukki (2011-2013). The left-sided defender came through the youth at TPS in his native Finland before joining Helsingborg in 2012 and then onto Belgian side Genk in 2016, where he spent five years.

The player then joined Ligue 1 side Brest in July 2021 but has played just 23 games across all competitions for the Breton club, and has played just 298 minutes of league football this season.

Uronen adds vital experience at left-back for Schalke, given they had played wide-forward Tobias Mohr in the position due to the absence of Ouwejan. The signing of Uronen should add some stability as Thomas Reis’ side look to close the gap to 17th placed Bochum, who are four points ahead.

Schalke resume their Bundesliga season against Eintracht Frankfurt on January 21.
