Young defender Jordy Makengo has extended his contract with SC Freiburg after the left-back moved to the first team after making 22 appearances for Freiburg II.
The 22-year-old joined Freiburg from Ligue 2 side Auxerre’s second team in the summer of 2021 and has impressed with development so far in the 3. Liga, but he is still waiting for his professional debut.
Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach has been delighted with the young defender’s progress so far and has explained the reasoning behind the reward of his new contract.
“Jordy has played his way into this situation through continuous appearances in our second team. His speed and flexibility in different positions are a big plus for him,” said Hartenbach.
“His existing qualities coupled with his conscientious work suggest further development – which can also happen very quickly. We are delighted with the extension.”
Makengo additionally spoke on his new contract and his development so far: “I’ve been here for two years and it’s moving forward step by step. I would like to continue this development at this football club. I feel fully back after my injury in pre-season, and I want to bring that energy to the pitch.”
The club captain Christian Günter who operates as a left-back is currently injured with a fractured arm which could keep him out of the team in the long term. This could open up an opportunity for Makengo to make some first team appearances.
Freiburg currently operate with a three at the back system with wing backs and Makengo’s versatility could see him playing a role in this side as he can play as a centre back as well as a fullback/wing back.
It has been agreed that the details of the contract will not be disclosed.
