Nottingham Forest boss Cooper: We’re progressing – but where we can improve

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper feels his midfield should be creating more chances.

Forest host Luton Town on Saturday for the Premier League’s resumption.

Cooper said today “I think we’ve not been creative and productive enough in the final third.

“There is no doubt that we have played some good football and got into some real dangerous areas as a team.

“It’s not just on the forward players, it’s the whole team. We should have made it count more than what we did.

“That’s definitely a challenge for us, but not forgetting what we have built since we have been in the Premier League as well, in terms of our togetherness, our spirit and our attitude to trying not to concede goals and to be a real team.

“Out of those three draws, when you look back and go ‘what should have been better’ the main thing for me is that we should have been creating and scoring more goals than we have.”

On their progress compared to last season, Cooper also said: “We try not to compare too much to last season because so much was different then to what it is now, which is normal having 12 months in the bank of Premier League experience.

“The reality is if you want to do well you have got to be able to score goals and keep the ball out of the back of your net. Goal difference is always a decent marker of how you are doing with that.”

He added: “We feel like we are progressing, we are aiming towards building something. That is going to take time, there are going to be ups and downs, but we have got to stick to the plan and commit to it.

“We know every game has got to be a productive game and that’s hopefully how we can progress. But it is one day at a time, one game at a time and take it as it comes.”
