L’Équipe report today that Paris Saint-Germain’s talks with captain Marquinhos over a contract renewal have still not led to a definitive agreement, months after they were opened.
Nevertheless, unlike many others in the squad, there is little doubt over the Brazilian defender’s desire to stay at the club, despite his poor performance in the Champions League elimination to Real Madrid.
An agreement in principle is in place over a mutual desire to renew the deal – his current contract expires in 2024, and a new contract would extend that stay by either two or three years.
However, the two parties are said to be distant with regard to the financial terms of a renewal. Marquinhos currently earns €1.2m a month, making him the fourth-highest earner at the club, behind the club’s star front three.
The Brazilian believes that his increased stature at the club – becoming captain since his last extension – and PSG turning down an €85m offer from Chelsea would justify an increase in his salary. PSG themselves are not worried and point out that there is no rush, with his current contract still running for another two and a half years.
