Newcastle set to sign Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon

Newcastle United are ready to sign Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes following an agreement in principle between the two teams.

According to reports, the charge will be 40 million euros (£35 million), plus an additional 8 million euros (£6.7 million) in add-ons.

The Brazilian underwent physical examinations while on international duty in South America, and the two clubs are finalizing arrangements before making an announcement.

The 24-year-old will be Newcastle United’s third January signing, but the Magpies, who are now third from the bottom of the Premier League, have signed England full-back Kieran Trippier for £12 million and Burnley striker Chris Wood for £25 million.

On Friday, manager Eddie Howe stated that Newcastle were “close” to signing a player, which was interpreted as Guimaraes, and that he “didn’t anticipate that would be the end of our interest in bringing in new players” before Monday’s deadline.

The club returned from a training camp to Saudi Arabia on Saturday and will face Everton in the Premier League on Tuesday, February 8.

Guimaraes, a defensive midfielder, would bolster a backline that has maintained just two clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
