New European Super League plans unveiled

As reported by The Telegraph, the European Super League has unveiled new plans in an attempt to finally get the project up and running.

The announcement was made by A22, the Spanish-based sister company to the European Super League. In the new plans, the format will be a multi-division competition of 60 to 80 teams with no permanent members. Instead, it will be merit-based and teams will play around 14 games per season.

A22 have angled the announcement to explain that they have done this to benefit all clubs financially. They have reportedly spoken with many clubs around Europe and finances were a big topic.

There are no specific details yet on who the first 60 to 80 will be or how they would drop out of the division to make way for new clubs.

This comes nearly two years after the first plans for a European Super League were announced with the backing of several founding clubs from around Europe. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund were invited but never agreed to the deal. This led to mass protests by fans and the plan was scrapped just days later. UEFA also protested and took the Super League founders to court.

There has already been backlash from league presidents. Javier Tebas, president of La Liga tweeted: “The Super League is the wolf, who today disguises himself as a granny to try to fool European football, but his nose and his teeth are very big. Four divisions in Europe? Of course the [top division] for them [the founding clubs], as in the 2019 plan. Governance of the clubs? Of course only from the big ones.”
