Napoli coach Spalletti ‘sorry’ after Cremonese Coppa Italia shock

Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti admits there’s disappointment after their Coppa Italia elimination by Cremonese.

After the tie ended 2-2, Cremonese stunned the Serie A leaders with victory in the penalty shootout.

Spalletti said: “We’re sorry, there’s so much disappointment. We always have to go from managing the match, the ball, and we weren’t as good as we usually are.

“But then the game was in complete safety because they, apart from a few balls on the attackers, they weren’t able to do much.

“We conceded goals in a situation where we lost two outgoing balls. Then we conceded two goals, wasting several chances, but unfortunately that’s how it works. When you question a game that was being managed, it becomes complicated.

“We didn’t do terribly badly, but we missed a few more balls than usual. I also included the midfield which plays more often to find the measures and manage the ball better. Instead, then in 2-3 situations inside the penalty area we suffered and in one of these situations we conceded a goal.

“In the end there was a little tiredness and we weren’t able to attack well, a bit of frenzy also came into play and we made some mistakes. They were very good on penalties, took them very well.”
