Real Madrid’s turnaround last night against Chelsea wrote another chapter in the legendary history of the Santiago Bernabeu by completing another comeback.
As if the Paris Saint-Germain edition wasn’t enough for one season, Los Blancos once again turned the tie on its head in the space of 21 minutes (including added time) to make it through to the semi-finals.
Speaking after the match, defender Nacho Fernandez was keen to highlight the attitude and effort of his teammates to Sport.
“Football is situations, it’s moments and the mind plays a big part in it. Chelsea looked for our weak points, but here we are. Madrid are prepared to fight in the good moments and the bad. Even if we hadn’t gone through, we left it all out there.”
Asked about another stellar performance from Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, Nacho had nothing but praise for the 36-year-old.
“At his age, he keeps getting better. He’s incredible and an example. It’s as if he is the youngest in the team and it’s a joy to play with him.”
Despite constant doubts about both the team and its coach, Real Madrid have reached, if not surpassed, expectations by getting to the Champions League semi-final. After knocking out the reigning champions, they will be watching on tonight to see if whether they face Atletico Madrid in a derby in the next round or last year’s runners-up, Manchester City.
