Micky van de Ven becomes Wolfsburg’s second most expensive departure

Micky van de Ven’s performances last season put the Dutch defender on the radar of several European clubs and with his move to Tottenham Hotspur now official, the 22-year-old becomes Wolfsburg second most expensive departure.

As reported by Kicker, Wolfsburg can expect to receive around €50m including bonuses from Tottenham from the sale of Van de Ven, who had a contract at VfL until 2027 – the Dutchman has signed a six-year deal until 2029 with the North London club.

The €50m transfer fee is a significant return on the €3.5m that Wolfsburg paid Volendam in 2021. Van de Ven’s move to Spurs sees the Dutchman rank second in Wolfsburg’s record departures, second to Kevin de Bruyne who joined Manchester City in 2015 for €76m.

In his first year at Wolfsburg, Van de Ven made just five Bundesliga appearances but the player’s breakthrough came last season, playing all but one Bundesliga game. With a top speed of 35.97km/h, as noted by Kicker, the Dutchman was the fastest second central-defender in the Bundesliga.

Van de Ven’s arrival at Tottenham under new boss Ange Postecoglou is a significant coup for the club, who had also targeted Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba had they failed in their pursuit of Van de Ven.
