L’Équipe report today that Mauricio Pochettino is willing to stay at Paris Saint-Germain in the wake of the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, but under certain conditions.
Although his contract runs until the end of next season, all signs are pointing to his summer departure following the second leg fiasco, having been linked in the past year to the likes of Manchester United or a return to Tottenham Hotspur.
In his press conference yesterday ahead of this afternoon’s match against Monaco, the Argentine batted away a question on his future, insisting that he was focused on finishing the season and that the club will decide at the end of the season.
Answering another question, Pochettino indicated that his intention was to stay and that he and his team were “very motivated” by the challenges ahead. He then went on to explain, though, that “with the club, we have to find the best way to work together”. “That means understanding we need to align our ideas, our project, our methods. There are lots of questions which need to be looked at so that a staff like us and a club like PSG have similar ideas and visions”.
His comments appeared to lament the lack of input he has in the club’s strategy, as his predecessors had commented as well.
Both in Paris and in Doha, discussions are underway behind the scenes with regard to the changes that need to be made at the club, although the club’s Qatari owners will not be rushed into a decision. Although no favourite to succeed Pochettino has emerged thus far, it appears unlikely that the former Spurs man will remain in any case.
