In his latest press conference, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has confirmed that the club are in talks over contract extensions with Anthony Martial (28) and Raphaël Varane (30). Contract talks with the French duo have come as quite a surprise with both players expected to depart Old Trafford within the next 6 months.
The opening of contract talks with Martial has been prompted by his current contract which is due to expire in June 2024. Varane’s contract situation is different with the former Real Madrid defender’s contract set to expire a year later in June 2025. Both players have had their struggles in the red shirt of the Manchester club this season with injuries and limited minutes at times.
Transfers remain a possibility
Despite contract talks being initiated by the Premier League club, this doesn’t rule out a transfer for both players. Martial is available to discuss terms with clubs as a free agent and has been linked with a move to Marseille in the recent past but these rumours were quashed.
Varane’s situation is, of course, different as clubs would have to pay a transfer fee to secure the player’s services from Manchester United. The former France international wants to leave Manchester United and Bayern Munich are interested in signing the 30-year-old, according to Florian Plettenberg.
