Man Utd interested in 389-game Germany star at Old Trafford

Manchester United are ‘interested in’ Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Red Devils got their first competitive victory under new manager Erik ten Hag last time out against Liverpool and will now look to strengthen their first-team squad ahead of September’s deadline.

What is the latest news involving Trapp?

Sheth’s employers recently revealed that Trapp is on United’s radar as they are eager to sign a new shot-stopper to provide cover and competition for David de Gea this season.

SportBild’s head of football Christian Falk then provided an update on the 32-year-old’s situation, stating that the Old Trafford outfit had ‘made an offer’ for the Frankfurt star.

And Trapp admitted that the speculation surrounding a potential switch to United was a ‘nice acknowledgement’ following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign.

“As I said during my first spell at Frankfurt, it’s always nice when rumours like this come out. It’s a nice acknowledgement. But I can’t say anything about it,” he said at the SportBild Awards (via 90min).

Trapp still has two years remaining on his £49,000-per-week contract at the Deutsche Bank Park, leaving Frankfurt in a strong position around the negotiating table.

What has Sheth said about Trapp?

United have also been credited with an interest in Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer, but Sheth believes the deal for Trapp ‘might have more legs’.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “The other one that has come from our colleagues at Sky in Germany was Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt.

“That’s another keeper that United are interested in, 32 years old. That one might have more legs than the Sommer one.”

Would Trapp be a good signing?

Trapp has racked up 389 senior club games throughout his career for FC Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt and Paris Saint-Germain, earning six caps for Germany along the way.

The 6 foot 2 ace claimed three Ligue 1 titles, three French Cup crowns and three French League Cups during his time at the Parc des Princes and added the Europa League to his trophy collection last term, starring in a penalty shoot-out victory over Rangers.

While Trapp may not be at the same level as the likes of Ederson and Alisson Becker, he is perhaps more suited to Ten Hag’s style of play and could, therefore, be an upgrade on De Gea.
