Lyon Women crowned French champions after win over PSG

Lyon were crowned champions of France for the 16th time in their history on Sunday night, as Sonia Bompasteur’s team saw off Paris Saint-Germain thanks to a late goal from Danish forward Signe Bruun.

The striker, a former PSG player who moved to Les Fenottes in 2021, connected with fellow substitute Amel Majri’s cross with two minutes to go to head in the title-winning goal, after what had been a balanced match between French Women’s football’s leading lights.

A week after Lyon took the Coupe de France final against tonight’s opponents, a win would have put the league title beyond PSG’s reach – with the visitors’ lead at the top being three points with two games remaining. The first half had been dominated by Lyon – Ada Hegerberg notably coming close with an audacious lob – but it was the hosts who began to gain the upper hand in the closing stages of the game, until Bruun put an end to their title hopes.

Lyon’s domestic double is a fitting send-off for long-time president Jean-Michel Aulas in style – whose vision over the course of his 36 years in charge is the main reason for the team’s long-running dominance. The team – who are now under new ownership – will have won every title since 2007 barring one, when PSG were crowned champions in 2021.
