Spain national team head coach Luis Enrique has revealed how he dropped keeper David de Gea from this month’s squad over a phone call.
De Gea has been part of the Spanish national team since 2014 but was left out by Luis Enrique for this month’s friendlies with Albania and Iceland and Enrique told Marca that he called the player to explain the decision.
“David, I want to try other goalkeepers,” Enrique said in the call.
The Manchester United man has since said he appreciated the call and the honesty from his coach ut vowed to fight for his position ahead of the 2022 World Cup later this year.
Enrique is picking Barca B’s keeper in the third division over de Gea.
This should be instructive for those who think he has any role at a club that harbors ambitions of playing modern football. https://t.co/xHrONBoCrB
