Liverpool 1-1 Tottenham: Diaz equalises for Reds but Spurs frustrate quadruple hopes at Anfield

After a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool face sliding farther behind Manchester City in the Premier League championship chase.

City went to the top of the league on goal difference, but they have the opportunity to increase their lead to three points against Newcastle on Sunday.

After a goalless first half, Son Heung-min stroked home in the 56th minute following a fluid Spurs move to give the Londoners a surprise lead.

They then resolutely defended amid continuous Liverpool pressure, and were slightly unlucky to surrender after 74 minutes to a deflected effort from Luis Diaz.

Liverpool appeared the more likely to score, despite Tottenham’s threat on the break, but failed to create the decisive chance. This was the first time they have lost any points at Anfield since October.

While this is a wonderful performance for Tottenham, Antonio Conte’s team is still one point behind Arsenal in the fight for fourth, with their opponents having a game in hand.

Liverpool still have three Premier League games left, against Aston Villa, Southampton, and Wolves.

City can now afford to draw one of their remaining games and still win the league.
