As reported by Kicker, Leeds United will go toe-to-toe with Marseille for the signing of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nadiem Amiri.
Marseille’s admiration of Die Werkself’s Amiri has long been known to the German club. But, while the French side are keen to lure the midfielder to the Stade Vélodrome, they have yet to make an offer for the 26-year-old.
Therefore, this has enabled Leeds to work on a deal with Leverkusen, and a €6m fee is considered to be suitable for all parties. With one year remaining on Amiri’s contract, Xabi Alonso’s side are hopeful of receiving an appropriate fee before the midfielder departs for free in the summer of 2024.
However, as reported by Florian Plettenberg, Amiri has turned down the chance to for the Championship club. With known interest from Marseille, Amiri would be guaranteed top-flight football, as well as having the opportunity to compete in European competition.
A deal between Leeds and Leverkusen will be guaranteed, but the five-time German international has his heart set on a move to Marseille. For Leverkusen, this sale would enable them to match Southampton’s valuation of Nathan Tella as they look to add depth to their attacking options.
