Spanish giants Barcelona moved to second on the LaLiga table following a slim 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Thursday.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal in the 11th minute to hand the Catalans a huge three points. Sociedad gave Barcelona enough pressure for the entire game but Xavi’s men held on to register a 1-0 win at San Sebastian.
The Blaugrana were also left sweating on the fitness of his defence, with all four members of its starting backline requiring treatment during the game and Ronald Araujo, Dani Alves, and Gerard Pique all taken off.
Barca ended their recent poor return after they were eliminated from the Europa League by Eintracht Frankfurt before losing to Cadiz in the LaLiga.
Xavi comments
“It is the game that I have suffered the most since I arrived in November,” Xavi told Movistar Plus.
“Real Sociedad dominated the game, they are a great team, they put us on the ropes and deserved more, perhaps a draw.
“That is why it has been a vital win, a precious victory. It was a well-fought and very important result that leaves us in second place, close to our objective of going to the Champions League next season.”
Xavi’s men are now second with 63 points, 15 behind leaders, and rivals Real Madrid.
