Although he was appearing before the media as France captain, Kylian Mbappé’s press conference this afternoon inevitably revolved around the recent news that he had no intention of renewing his Paris Saint-Germain contract past the end of next season.
Beyond the rumours about a potential departure as early as this summer, the Ligue 1 top scorer was notably asked about his reasons for deciding against extending with his hometown club. His answer, although confirming his intentions, was somewhat cryptic with regard to his motivations:
“I don’t need to explain, people can criticise and analyse… I was once an observer, I didn’t understand everything [in football]. They don’t know the ins and outs, too bad for them. I know why I’m doing this, there’s no issue with that.”
Mbappé will be setting aside talk of his future tomorrow evening as he lead France out against Gibraltar in Faro as part of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, before Les Bleus host Greece three days later. Didier Deschamps’ men are top of their group after two games, with the PSG man having scored a double against The Netherlands in the first match of the campaign back in March, in what was his first outing as skipper.
