Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe has provided his take on the ruthless reception afforded to teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma during last night’s meeting with Milan.
The Rossoneri of course played host to the French champions on Tuesday, ultimately emerging on the right side of a crucial 2-1 result courtesy of goals from Rafael Leão and Olivier Giroud.
And yet, it was the name of the aforementioned Donnarumma which took its place centre stage in the headlines both before and after the San Siro clash.
This came as the Milan faithful made crystal clear once again their feelings towards the club’s former no.1.
After first raining down fake dollar bills with Donnarumma’s face printed on them, to reiterate his ‘Dollarumma’ nickname, the home crowd followed up by roundly jeering the Italian each and every time he touched the ball.
Speaking to the media post-match, as much was therefore put to PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe.
And the Frenchman went on to defend his goalkeeper, suggesting that the abuse directed towards Donnarumma was a touch over the top:
“There was a lot of noise and they gave Gigio quite a difficult reception, Mbappe told TeleLombardia, via Milannews.
“I think it was a bit too much, but there you go, that’s football nowadays. The fans do what they want, we can’t know what they feel inside. We protected Gigio as much as we could, and we feel sorry for him this evening.”
Mbappe was also quick to congratulate Milan for an impressive victory on the night:
“The problem is us, when we don’t win the problem is always us, we won’t look for the problem elsewhere. We didn’t manage to win, Milan had confidence and congratulations to them.”
