Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this summer.
The Bavarian giants have identified Upamecano as the prime target to strengthen the central defensive department and club director Hasan Salihamidzic recently revealed secret talks with the player’s agents.
It is widely known that Bayern want to sign Upamecano and in an interview with Sky Sport Germany, Rummenigge has openly admitted that Upamecano may replace David Alaba whose contract expires in June.
He added that there are at least two more clubs in the running to sign the France international and later mentioned the names of Chelsea and Liverpool as the interested teams.
“In addition to Bayern Munich, there are at least two quite attractive clubs interested. The fact is that the player is interesting, and the fact is that we will almost certainly lose David Alaba in that position. I can’t say if there will be other departures in that position,” He told.
“We have a good relationship with RB Leipzig as well. I have had a conversation with Oliver Mintzlaff. When things become concrete, we’ll talk again. The fact that Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in him proves that he has very good qualities. He can replace David Alaba.”
Bayern are currently one of the best-performing teams in Europe and they appear on course for a ninth straight league title, having already gained a seven-point lead over Leipzig at the top of the standings.
Upamecano has a release clause worth £38m which will become active in June and Bayern look set to make an approach, having already held talks with Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
The 22-year-old has lucrative options in the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea interested, but the chance of remaining in the Bundesliga and winning silverware should be a tempting prospect for him.
