According to a report from L’Équipe, Lille captain José Fonte is still uncertain about whether his club intends to offer him a contract extension. After five seasons and 195 matches with the club, Fonte’s future at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy hangs in the balance.
Speculation arose on Saturday evening as fans chanted Fonte’s name when he left the pitch after LOSC’s victory over Nantes (2-1). However, there was no official tribute, indicating that nothing has been finalised regarding the defender’s future, apart from his own desire to continue.
Later, when questioned about Fonte’s situation, LOSC President Olivier Létang clarified, “No decision has been made. We met about ten days ago and agreed to assess the situation at the end of the season to determine our position and which competition we would play in next year. We did the same two years ago, for example.”
The current season has presented some challenges for Fonte due to missing several matches with muscular injuries. Additionally, with Paulo Fonseca implementing a higher defensive line, Fonte’s lack of speed has become more apparent. Nonetheless, considering Tiago Djalo’s prolonged absence due to a knee injury, Fonte, who is prepared to accept reduced playing time, could still contribute if LOSC secures qualification for the UEFA Europa League next weekend.
