Barcelona club president Joan Laporta has responded to criticism regarding his club’s transfer behaviour including comments made by Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, Kicker reports.
With the recent signing of Jules Koundé, Barcelona made their latest expensive signing of the transfer window.
So far this summer, the Spanish side have signed Raphinha from Leeds United, Robert Lewandowski from Bayern, and now Koundé from Sevilla. These three transfers come to a total of around €150m.
For a club that is supposedly in massive amounts of debt, it’s a significant spending spree especially when other players haven’t left.
Speaking earlier in the week, Nagelsmann said: “They not only bought Lewy, but also some other players, I don’t know how. It’s the only club in the world that has no money but buys every player. That’s strange and crazy.”
Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn was more cautious in his assessment of Barcelona’s transfer activity.
The former German goalkeeper said: “You can’t be misled on this. I’m not a fan of always judging things from the outside. It’s been said that Barcelona have accumulated quite a few debts in the past. But none of us can really do internal things judge.”
This talk elected a response from Barca president Laporta: “I would ask that you look at your bank account, you received a lot of money for the transfer from Lewandowski. I respect everyone and I don’t interfere in other people’s finances,” said the president.
Laporta then added that Bavaria should “take care of itself.”
There’s clearly no love lost between Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Only time will tell whether Barcelona’s activity is legitimate and secondly durable.
