Tottenham Hotspur defender, Emerson Royal, according to a source, has piqued the interest of Atletico Madrid ahead of a possible summer transfer.
After impressing during a two-year stay with Real Betis in La Liga, the 23-year-old only moved to North London for about £25.8 million last summer.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, the Brazilian struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Tottenham’s starting lineup, but he went on to make 41 appearances for the club in all competitions during his first season in England.
In the wing-back area, Emerson was frequently favored over Matt Doherty, while the possibility of Djed Spence joining Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer has cast doubt on Conte’s faith in the Brazil international as a first-choice option.
With that in mind, Sky Sports reports that Atletico Madrid is interested in bringing Emerson back to Spain this summer. Diego Simeone’s side has had a long-standing interest in the defender.
According to the source, Atletico Madrid were interested in acquiring Emerson last year, but he chose to join Spurs instead, where he signed a contract until June 2026.
Atletico have been hunting for a right-back replacement since Kieran Trippier’s £12 million left to Newcastle United in January, and Emerson appears to be the newest of those targets.
