Inter Miami coach Phil Neville has explained allowing former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale to join LA FC.
Despite having priority, as per the MLS’ Discovery List, Miami chose not to go for Bale, settling instead for the 75-thousand-dollar compensation package due to them from LAFC.
It was Neville who explained to reporters on Wednesday that Bale didn’t end up in Florida because the franchise “didn’t want to” sign him.
“At this moment in time, I feel as if we’re still in that foundation, building block phase,” said Neville.
“And there will be times when we add the cherries and the icings on the cake.
“As much as it’s, yes, great on paper and all that business, we felt from a roster point of view, we felt from what we really wanted from this season, [Jean] and the other players hopefully we’ll bring in fit what we want at this moment in time.”
Neville admitted that Bale is a fantastic player who will make Los Angeles stronger, but that the timing wasn’t right for the project Inter Miami are building.
“[Bale] would enhance any football team, but we have a cap at this football club, we have a certain level of player that we think will improve us in certain areas,” Neville said.
“Good luck to Gareth at LAFC. I’m glad we don’t have to play them again.
“They are ahead of us in terms of what they’re building, but we’ll catch them.”
