DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has confirmed that Hansi Flick will remain as the head coach of the German national team despite disappointing results since the World Cup.
The latest set of international friendlies saw Germany face Ukraine, Poland and Colombia in their preparation for the European Championship. However, a 3-3 draw against Ukraine before back-to-back defeats to Poland and Colombia saw the pressure increase on the German head coach.
Nevertheless, Neuendorf would tell SID: “I called him. (Flick) The national coach assured me that in September we will see a team that performs differently than last time,” before adding: “We have all wished for more successful international matches since the World Cup. We are, therefore, very disappointed and frustrated after yesterday’s game.”
Neuendorf would conclude by explaining how: “The experience of our sporting director Rudi Völler will help.” Völler was appointed in January as Germany’s new sporting director after they failed to progress out of their group for a second consecutive World Cup.
With Germany hosting the European Championship next summer, Flick had been experimenting with different players and a variety of formations to try and find a winning formula that had been missing for the national team. However, with four wins in their last 16 matches, Flick has promised to stop experimenting with his side and focus on winning games again.
Nonetheless, the two games against Japan and France in September could be pivotal for Flick, as then the DFB would have to act appropriately to ensure the national side do not disappoint at home Euro 2024, which they’re hosting.
