During the Matchday -1 press conference before Germany face Costa Rica in their final World Cup group game, Hansi Flick was asked if he would resign if Germany do not qualify out of the group.
Flick responded: “From my side, I can confirm this,” stating that he will be in charge for Euro 2024 which is hosted in Germany. On the next tournament Flick added: “I’m looking forward to it.”
A similar situation happened with Joachim Löw in 2018 when Germany were knocked out at the group stage. Low stayed on until Euro 2020. Flick discussed how this does not affect him: “I am a coach who looks forward positively. That’s why I absolutely don’t think about these thoughts.”
Flick took charge of Germany in 2021, replacing Löw. Flick was once the assistant to Löw from 2006 to 2014. He had previously started his reign off with Germany strongly until a 1-0 loss to Hungary in the UEFA Nations League highlighted problems that Germany have.
Germany must win their last group game against Costa Rica to qualify for the Round of 16. Germany had lost their opener against Japan before coming from behind to draw with Spain to set them up for this crucial encounter against the Central Americans.
