Speaking after he announced Germany’s squad for their upcoming international friendlies, Hansi Flick spoke on why certain players missed out on the squad and why players were chosen.
One of the most notable omissions from this Germany squad is Leon Goretzka. On his choice, Flick said: “The nomination was about who gives the team energy, who puts his ego at the back. Everyone who performs still has the chance to jump up again. I spoke to Leon in person on Wednesday, he knows my thoughts. I appreciate him very much, it’s nothing final.”
While Timo Werner has also missed out on the squad, which is also a surprise considering Germany lacks a recognised striker, when asked about the Leipzig striker’s absence, Flick said: “He does not quite have the form in the club and has to work on certain things. But I am convinced that if he does, he can come back.”
The most surprising inclusion in the squad is Brighton’s Pascal Groß, the 32-year-old earns his first-ever call-up to the national team. Flick commented on the midfielder’s inclusion: “He plays very intelligent football, has been convincing in England for years, is a good guy. He is very happy and we are very much looking forward to seeing him.”
Germany play two friendlies in the international break. They start the week against Japan in Wolfsburg before facing a tough test against France in Dortmund. In the previous international break before the summer, Germany failed to win their games against Ukraine, Poland and Colombia.
Under Flick, Germany have been poor and if their terrible form in friendlies continues it is not entirely possible that Flick would be sacked as national team manager ahead of the country hosting the European Championships next summer.
