Former Italy coach Giampiero Ventura says Roberto Mancini is right not to step down.
Some have called for Mancini to resign after Italy’s World Cup qualifying failure.
Italy missed the last World Cup after Ventura’s team lost their playoff against Sweden.
“After the defeat against North Macedonia, President Gabriele Gravina was sitting close to Mancini. I had been left alone at San Siro, I was the only guilty. It wasn’t fair,” Ventura told Il Corriere della Sera.
“I paid for my errors, but it’s the past now and I’ve gone over it.
“Mancini is right to continue. There are all the conditions to continue what was interrupted at Palermo. This time we didn’t talk. I had congratulated him [Mancini] after the win at the Euros.
“There had been some signals in the last few months. We struggled to score goals. The team was brave during the Euros, but against North Macedonia, you could feel the fatigue and apprehension. In some way, it was like watching Italy vs. Sweden again, but the context was really different because my national team had been criticised even before the play-off.
“I was eliminated by Spain and Sweden, but I don’t like to make comparisons. I hope Italy will soon return among the best teams in the World.”
