Talks between Borussia Dortmund’s Sebastian Kehl and Emre Can’s consultant Reza Fazeli have taken place.
Bild report that these talks have been good and that both parties are close to reaching an agreement, which may be found before the 2023/24 Bundesliga season. Discussions between the two are ongoing, but it’s not yet known whether Can’s contract, which expires in 2024, will be a two or three-year extension. Can, one of Dortmund’s highest earners, is also reportedly willing to accept financial losses but to sign a performance-related contract.
This comes just days after WAZ reported that Borussia Dortmund were planning a contract extension for Can, who was one of BVB’s better players towards the end of the campaign after a mistake-ridden start to the season.
Could this affect the Edson Álvarez deal?
Borussia Dortmund are still working on a deal to bring Ajax’s Edson Álvarez to the club. The Mexican wants to join the Bundesliga side but there appears to be a standoff in negotiations between the two clubs.
Ajax want a fee of around €40m for Álvarez, according to Bild, which would take the total package to sign the 25-year-old to a figure between €60m and €70m with a long-term contract.
If Dortmund do sign Álvarez, Edin Terzic will have to find a way to play both the Mexico international and Can, who is considered a leader within the Dortmund squad. BVB are also working on a deal to bring Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha (22) to the club this summer.
