France’s dream of winning back to back World Cups came another step closer as they beat England in a tense quarter-final in Qatar.

The reigning world champions were the favourites for the clash but were made to work frightfully hard for their victory by a spirited England side that many may argue was better on the day.

With a spot against Morocco in the last four beckoning, it was France who would get the job done to ensure that, once again, football would not be ‘coming home’.

France open the scoring with lovely Tchouameni strike

It was Aurelien Tchouameni who would set the ball rolling with a rasping first-half strike from outside the box that left Jordan Pickford grasping at air.

From that point on, France managed the game with aplomb, going into the break a goal to the good and in confident mood.

However, it was a different England side in the second stanza as Gareth Southgate’s men piled the pressure on in search of a precious equaliser.

England bounce back through Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane

A golden opportunity to grab said equaliser materialised when Bukayo Saka, who had been running French defenders ragged all night long, was hacked down in the box to earn a blatant penalty.

Captain Harry Kane lashed the ball home to get England fans dreaming of glory once again.

However, France and its glut of superstars are not easily beaten and it was a man familiar in English climes that would land the killer blow.

Olivier Giroud lands killer blow

Latching onto a sumptuous Antoine Griezmann cross, Olivier Giroud would head home to restore the French lead and leave England staring down the barrel.

While Giroud’s header may not have been the perfect connection – it was diverted into the goal off Harry Maguire’s arm – the cross from Griezmann was absolutely spot on.

Now, fan footage has emerged showing an alternate angle to the Griezmann wizardry and it proves just how ridiculously good his ball was.

That goal would prove to be enough for France after late drama saw Kane spurn another chance from the spot to equalise.

He blazed his shot high and wide, much to the joy of a certain Kylian Mbappe.

Now, with Brazil crashing out and Morocco lying in wait, France will be confident of going all the way to glory in Qatar.

They would do well not to take Morocco lightly though, otherwise they could be next in a long line of global football superpowers that the spirited African nation have sent packing.
