A one-time star member of the attacking ranks at Milan has, on Saturday, moved to lavish praise on Rossoneri star Rafael Leão.
Wide-man Leão, of course, has seen his name take its place centre stage in the headlines on the red half of the Milan divide for several weeks now. This comes as the Portuguese international continues to struggle for consistency – like Milan themselves.
After starting the season in stellar form, Leão soon found himself the subject of heavy criticism, owing to a string of altogether lacklustre displays.
And yet, in midweek, the 24-year-old provided a timely reminder of his unquestionable talents when firing on all cylinders, courtesy of a match-winning display against Paris Saint-Germain.
One individual of the opinion that it is such performances, in turn, which fans and the media alike should focus on, comes in the form of former Diavolo standout Dejan Savićević.
Speaking in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport on Saturday, Savićević, who lined out for Milan from 1992 to 1998, revealed his admiration for Leão, going as far as to label the attacker ‘a little genius’:
“Leao is a great player, Milan’s best in the last two or three years. For me it’s not a surprise when he plays like he did against PSG.
“For me it’s a surprise to go to Qatar for the World Cup and not see him as a starter. Every now and then Leao is a genius like I was. A little genius… but different.”
