Ex-Man City midfielder Hamann: Guardiola never wanted Haaland

Former Manchester City midfielder Didi Hamann claims manager Pep Guardiola never wanted to sign Erling Haaland.

The Norway international’s goalscoring spree has slowed since the World Cup break.

Hamann told talkSPORT: “Haaland’s virtue is the opposite of City’s virtue. City were successful because they kept the ball, had pace, had fluidity in the game and shared goals. Now they have a player who, a lot of the time, is barely part of the squad game. It’s like playing with ten.

“I don’t care how many goals he scores. You have to see how many goals the team scores. They have scored fewer goals than in the same period last season and they have fewer points.

“I don’t think he’s going to improve the team in the long run, and that’s the main problem. I never thought he’d go to Manchester City because he’s a player Guardiola never wanted.”
