Ex-Everton midfielder Sigurdsson makes Lyngby makes debut: Now for Iceland

Former Everton and Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson made his playing return with Lyngby on Friday night.

The veteran Icelander made a 20 minute cameo as Lyngby drew with Vejle – the first time he has played since May 2021. Sigurdsson forced out of football in England over claims of sexual abuse, which he was cleared of earlier this year.

After his playing return, Sigurdsson said: “I think I have two goals. My biggest goal is to beat the goal record for the Icelandic national team. I only need one to equalize. That is the main goal as well as playing for Iceland again.

“The second is to challenge myself. I want to see if I can get back to my best level again after being out for such a long time.

“My focus is to get back in good shape as soon as possible and play for the team.

“Hopefully we can finish in a good position in the table. I don’t have any long-term goals. I want to enjoy playing football and see how well I can do it.

“If things go well and I enjoy being here, I may stay for a year or two more. But there may also be another offer, and it may be that I want to try to experience something new.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m only focusing on getting in top shape again, because I’m still quite far away from being so.”
