Luis Enrique has explained why David de Gea was left out of the Spain squad ahead of the upcoming international break.
Enrique says De Gea ‘s omission from the Spain squad was because the goalkeeper does not suit their style of play. Brentford goalkeeper David Raya earned his first call-up as three shot-stoppers were named in the squad. Raya who has never represented Spain at any level has kept five clean sheets for Brentford in 15 Premier League appearances.
He is joined by Unai Simon and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Robert Sanchez.
“It is part of the tracing we do with the goalkeepers,” said Enrique, explaining why he had awarded Raya his first call-up.
“He is a player who is doing very well.”
“I really want to see it in the context of the selection. He has the necessary profile to play with us.”
Spain will face Albania and Iceland in upcoming international friendlies over the international break later this month.
